Gulf coast hurricane season runs June 1st to Nov 30th.

What does that mean for us?….
Always be prepared. Here are the steps you should take yearly and when a storm is heading for our area. Remember our “area” could be from Corpus Christi to Lake Charles. We do not need to have a direct strike by the eye to experience strong, damaging winds and heavy rains. Each storm is different. Stay vigilante and informed.
No need to rehash emergency preparedness. There are many resources for that, but here are some things many don’t think about.
- Things in your yard will blow away. If you can’t bring it in, then tie it down.
Trampolines, yard furniture, trash cans, kids toys, swing sets, pool floats. Be sure any loose items in your yard are put away. - On trash pickup days, don’t put the cans out on the street if there is potential for overnight storms. They will stop up the drainage system.
- Weight doesn’t always matter. Just because it seems heavy, doesn’t mean it won’t blow around. 40 mph winds is enough to blow over a semi-truck weighing thousands of pounds.
- Trim your trees. To much overgrowth can be an issue.
- Have your roof inspected every year. Damage can sneak up on you and inspections don’t usually cost you anything.
- Start your generator every year. Don’t wait till the last minute and never run a generator indoors or near open windows. Move at least 20ft from the home and be mindful of the wind direction. Carbon monoxide is orderless and colorless.
- Know your home. Many don’t stop and think about how they are going to cook until the electricity is out. Or, is the hot water heater gas or electric.
- Check on your neighbors. None of us live in this neighborhood alone.
